England got off to the perfect start with two victories at the Amputee Football World Championship in Brazil.

The England Amputee Team arrived last Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro for the Amputee Football World Championship and played their first match against Turkey on Saturday in front of over 300 local people.

The England team had the ideal start, opening the scoring after just two minutes.  A Steve Johnson free-kick was headed home powerfully at the far post by Lee Wolfenden.

The second half saw a purple patch within ten minutes for England, as first Wolfenden struck another post and Williams hit a powerful shot against the crossbar from 25 yards.

Pressure soon paid off, as Dave Tweed scored with a powerful shot through a crowded goal area after 40 minutes and with time running out, Lee Dobson slid the ball home at the near post to seal a 3-0 victory for The Three Lions.

Less than 24 hours later, England played their second match of the Championships against Sierra Leone on Sunday morning in heat wave conditions.

Having seen Russia put six goals past their opponents yesterday, the pressure was on to ensure a similar result to keep pace with the joint favourites.

The match was barely one minute old when Lee Dobson reacted quickest to a defensive mistake to slide the ball home for the first England goal. The second goal came courtesy of a Jason Williams' pin point corner which was headed powerfully back across goal and into the top corner of the net by Wolfenden.

The first half just got better and better for England with Wolfenden weaving his way through the defence to hit a third passed a disgruntled keeper on 20 minutes.

With the points safely in the bag, manager Dave Connor, decided to ring some changes and offer international debuts to four substitutes in order to gain experience. The flowing football enjoyed in the first half was slightly more subdued in the second period as the heat intensified.

Dave Tweed added a fourth goal with a volley into the top of the net on 38 minutes and on 49 minutes, Jonathan Elsegood raced through to score his first international goal and England's fifth of the game.

This result temporarily means the team are top of the group stages after two matches.  More difficult matches now follow, with Brazil later today and Russia on Tuesday.

England Squad:

Carl Richardson, Tyrone Welcome, Steve Johnson, Chris Foster, Jason Williams, Lee Wolfenden, Dave Tweed, Sean Kelly, Dave Latimer, Lee Dobson, Jonathan Elsegood, Garreth Durrant and Michael Chambers.
