The England Amputee team have suffered a set back in their quest to triumph at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro at the hands of the tournament favourites Russia.

Having to play two high profile matches in just 18 hours took its toll on the players, with the game once again played in sweltering heat, despite the game kicking off at 9am.

The team had to endure sustained Russian pressure from the first whistle and it was evident the players were still reeling from the strains of having beaten Brazil hours earlier.  Despite this, headers from Lee Wolfenden and Lee Dobson were both just off target in the first period.

At half-time the score was goalless, but the crucial first goal came just one minute into the second half as the English defence reacted second to a through ball, a low shot past Carl Richardson giving Russia the lead.

England swiftly found themselves two goals down three minutes later following a quick corner and at this point changes were made to introduce fresh legs into the game.

Michael Chambers came on to make his international debut and his pace quickly caused some errors in the Russian defence, 'their keeper being forced into a number of impressive saves.

With just seven minutes left, Garreth Durrant was introduced to the frontline, meaning the England forward line comprised two teenagers.  Despite their efforts and one late Dave Tweed shot, this was not be England's day and their 100 percent record came to an end.

Despite this, England still remain second in the group and have their final group stage match against Ukraine on Thursday morning.  A semi-final berth is pretty much assured following other results, and TheFA.com will keep you updated on the team's progress.
