With six players making their debut England started brightly, playing positive, attractive football. In the 3rd minute a good move resulted in Paul Walters, England captain, firing over the bar and having gained the early momentum Rudi Hall capitalised on a mistake in the Hungarian defence to drive a low shot into the bottom corner to put the 3 Lions in front.

England playing patience football in hot and humid conditions (37 C) created a number of further chances with the midfield trio of Walters, Whitlock and Lineker combining well to continually carve through the Hungary defence.

In the 28th minute England's dominance paid with the best goal of the night. After some quick one-touch passing around the box, Lee Whitlock found Rudi Hall to finish the move with an exquisite curling shot into the top right hand corner. Hall then completed his hat trick in the 38th minute when a cross from Paul Walters found him unmarked on the edge of the 6-yard box. At half-time, England deservedly went in with the scoreline England 3-0 Hungary.

Playing for pride at the start of the second half, the Hungarians quickly pulled a goal back through Sagi Gabor.

England though once again began to re assert themselves and after a foul on the ever threatening Hall, Hall himself delivered a free-kick into the box flicked on by Brian Wheeldon, to be finished emphatically by a diving header from Bradley Brotherton.

Basking in the afterglow of a highly impressive opening victory, England manager Lyndon Lynch commented:

"I am really pleased for all the players and staff; they have all applied themselves and this result is a great testament to that. I am particularly happy to see Rudi Hall get a hat-trick, it is a great achievement on his first appearance.

"The midfield worked tirelessly throughout the game and Paul Walters lead by example until he picked up an injury. It was a great team performance and we look forward to our next game on Monday against Hong Kong which could see us qualify for the next round if we win".
