Jordan joined his hometown club, Sunderland, at the age of eight and worked his way through the academy system.
Having made his first team debut in November 2008, he was loaned out to Coventry City in the same season, before coming back to the Stadium of Light and asserting himself as a regular starter in Steve Bruce’s midfield during 2009-10.
Having made solitary appearances for England’s U19s and U20s, Jordan picked up his first Under-21 appearance in the friendly against Uzbekistan in 2010 and was a key player as Stuart Pearce's side reached the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
In the build-up to the Finals, Jordan made his England senior team debut against France at Wembley in November 2010 and prior to flying to Denmark completed a move from Sunderland to Liverpool.
