Portugal was born here. In 1140, Dom Afonso Henriques, the country’s founder king, made it his home.

Today, around 160,000 people call Guimarães home, and its beautifully preserved castle and walls have earned renewed status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Rural life in the surrounding hills and valleys of the Baixo Minho region helps lend a pleasant town and country balance to Guimarães.

As for things to do, there’s plenty to explore beyond its rich cultural heart. Penha Mountain by cable car, thermal stations, museums, leafy parks and a Sporting City are all popular activities.
