Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni.
Giovanni Trapattoni
Trapattoni finally took charge of Italy in the summer of July 2000 after previously being linked with the role on a number of occasions.
Boasting the best record in Serie A history, Trapattoni won trophies with Juventus and Internazionale before moving to Germany to take charge of Bayern Munich.
After a spell at Fiorentina, he took the Italy role following the resignation of Dino Zoff.
Trapattoni remained in charge despite a disappointing 2002 World Cup when Italy went out in the second round. Their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign was also far from convincing.
Trapattoni admits to having a cautious approach, avoiding too many risks and placing the emphasis on results.
