Though they reached the 2002 World Cup Final, Germany were expected to have a tough time of it in Group 5 and so it proved.
Germany's passage to Lisbon came courtesy of a 3-0 home win over Iceland, Michael Ballack in the first half, followed by a wonder goal from former Bolton Wanderers striker Fredi Bobic and then a third from in-form Stuttgart forward Kevin Kuranyi.
Iceland could still have finished in second but Berti Vosts' Scotland recorded a tense 1-0 win in front of a capacity Hampden Park crowd to finish in second, United's Darren Fletcher volleying home the winner 20 minutes from time on his full international debut.
