Everton's youth side were made to work hard as they overcame a resilient Middlesbrough side 1-0 at the Billingham Stadium.

After 90 minutes of stalemate, the game went into extra-time when a Conor McAleny header in the 103rd minute was enough to break the deadlock and seal a Fourth Round place for the Blues.

Burnley's youngsters enjoyed a much easier time as they secured a comfortable 4-1 away win at Scunthorpe. Scottish youngster Joe McKee was the architect, creating three goals as Burnley scored four times in the second half.

Elsewhere, Stoke City required a last-minute strike from Adrian Pennock to edge into the next stage at the expense of Carlisle United. In an entertaining game, both sides had chances to score but with extra-time looming, Pennock headed in the only goals on the night with virtually the last kick of the game to send City through.

Joining them in the next round will be QPR after a 3-1 victory over Southampton, partly thanks to a late brace from Antonio German. The rain-soaked conditions contributed to a poor game as both sides struggled to create any clear opportunities at Loftus Road. Frankie Sutherland had given the hosts the lead in the first-half only for the visitors to equalise on the hour mark through Callum McNish. German than scored twice late in the game to ensure Rangers advanced to the Fourth Round.
