Defeated Everton boss Mo Marley couldn’t hide her disappointment on Thursday evening after seeing her side miss out on The FA Women’s Premier League Cup.
They were on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline at Spotland, despite going into the game as firm favourites and Marley sees the result as something of a wake-up call for her players.
“It's a reality check, we are very disappointed,” she said.
“As a team, we couldn't cope with the conditions and external peripherals and it affected the way we played. Credit to Leeds though, they capitalised on that and they deserved to win the game.”
Everton found themselves two goals down at half time before pulling a goal back through Fara Williams, but they couldn’t draw level and a late goal from Leeds’ Ellen White completed the scoring.
"I told them the first half wasn't good enough and not good enough for the standards that we've set,” revealed Marley.
"The first-half performance was sub-standard. I was happy with the response but not happy with the overall performance.
"I think the only way we move on from here now is by the players developing a winning mentality, aspire to bigger and better things, cope with being under pressure and being the so-called favorites, and taking the advantage and capitalising on it when you are the better team.
"Sunday will be a reflection of whether the girls have assessed their performances honestly. If they've listened then they will take things on board. And I think we can only look to Sunday and see if that is the positive response that we are looking for."
