Sunderland moved a step closer to retaining The FA Women’s Premier League Cup following a 2-0 win over Cardiff in the quarter final.

Beth Mead put the Black Cats ahead just before the half-hour mark, turning home a Sophie Williams cross.

But Mick Mulhern’s side had to wait until the 80th minute to secure the win, when Mead rounded Cardiff ‘keeper Rhian Nokes and teed up Williams to score.

Mulhern said: “It was a tough game against a well organised side.

“Obviously after a few weekends without a competitive game we were a bit rusty.

“I’m pleased with my players and it’s a sign of a good team who can dig in and win ugly.”
