Mo Marley's Everton defied the odds to win their first silverware in a decade and end Arsenal's incredible unbeaten run, with Amy Kane scoring the goal that decided The FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup Final.
Arsenal had conquered the Women's game in 2007 by winning an unprecedented quadruple, but Everton proved that the Gunners will not have it all their own way this year by winning the first final of the 2008.
Having finished second to Arsenal in the League last term, Everton were determined to challenge the Gunners domination of the English game and this victory is an important step in the right direction.
"This is a fantastic night for Everton," Marley admitted after the game.
"It's the first time since we beat Arsenal in 2005 that the players have shown the absolute belief in themselves that they showed on that occasion.
"Now we have to build on this - and it will hopefully be the start of Everton becoming a successful team winning trophies on a regular basis."
