Today has been branded “Non-League Day” with supporters of Premier League and Championship clubs being urged to support their local teams this afternoon in the absence of top flight fixtures.
England’s European Championship qualifying double-header against Bulgaria and Switzerland means a break in the domestic campaign for clubs in the top two tiers of English football but it’s all systems go in the Non-League pyramid with 3pm fixtures ranging from Step 1 and the Conference down to small regional leagues in Step 6 such as the Midlands Combination, North-West Counties, Eastern Counties and the South West Peninsula.
This weekend also sees The FA Carlsberg Vase return to action with the First Qualifying Round taking place across the country.
The campaign is the brainchild of James Doe, a lifelong QPR fan and follower of Harrow Borough: “I urge all fans of the big clubs to get out and watch their local non-league team instead on Saturday 4 September.
“Given the current financial climate, clubs outside the Football League need all the support they can get, so your presence at a game will be genuinely appreciated.
“With tickets and refreshments at a fraction of the cost, what’s stopping you?”
