Goals either side of half-time from Nathan Elder and Danny Kedwell had seen the south-west London club establish a 2-1 advantage, before Jonny Wright’s 81st minute strike for the visitors, his second of the game, set up a nail-biting finale.
And it was 21-year-old midfielder Vipond who was the hero for Workington, who now take their place in the draw for the Fourth Round Proper.
Joining them will be Conference Premier promotion chasers Oxford United, who eased past Chelmsford City 3-1 at Melbourne Stadium.
Matt Green gave the visitors the lead five minutes before half-time, before two second-half goals from Jack Midson ensured Dave Rainford’s 79th minute penalty for the hosts was merely a consolation.
Elsewhere, Stevanage Borough triumphed 4-1 over Dover thanks to goals from Tim Sills, Chris Beardsley, Michael Bostwick and Yemi Odubade.
And in the day’s only other tie to beat the weather, York City ground out a tense 1-0 victory against Corby Town at KitKat Crescent.
Andy Ferrell struck the game’s only goal from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time, and manager Martin Foyle was delighted to see his side come through a difficult tie.
“Corby are a decent side and the pitch today made it a leveller,” he said. “We had to play to our strengths and play to the conditions.
“I’m delighted to have kept another clean sheet and I’m pleased for the players because they’ve set the standard that is required.”
