York City's quest for Wembley date is realised.
York City 2-1 AFC Telford The FA Trophy, sponsored by Carlsberg Semi-Final second leg 3pm, Saturday 21 March 2009 Kit-Kat Crescent, York City FC Winning clubs will receive £16,000 from The FA York City’s triumphant players celebrated together with fans on the pitch after a 2-1 second leg victory over AFC Telford had given the Minstermen a 4-1 aggregate victory in the FA Trophy Semi-Final - booking them a place in The Final against Stevenage Borough at Wembley.3,512 fans packed into Kit Kat Crescent and created a party atmosphere as Martin Foyle’s side comfortably outplayed their Conference North opponents. York dropped out of the Football League five years ago, so there were emotional scenes in the stands and the director’s box after today’s triumph gave the club another taste of the big time. York held a two-goal advantage from the first leg, with a 2-0 scoreline over Telford at New Bucks Head last Saturday, and the Minstermen continued where they left off, enjoying the better of the early exchanges. Striker Richard Brodie gave the home side the lead, with his 20th goal of the season, when he hit a superb left-footed drive from the edge of the box which rebounded in off the post of Telford goalkeeper Ryan Young. Foyle’s side failed to make the most of several clear-cut chances but left the field at the break to a standing ovation from the home supporters who sensed that a Cup Final day trip to London might finally be within touching distance. York’s pressure continued after the break and the tie was finally put beyond all doubt by Daniel McBreen on 66 minutes. The striker bagged his sixth goal in The Trophy this season with a confident left-footed strike after confusion in the Telford defence. The Bucks had faced a daunting fixture schedule of late, including a nine-hour return trip to Blyth Spartans in mid-week, and fatigue was undoubtedly a factor as Rob Smith’s side never looked like upsetting their hosts. With just four minutes left on the clock, Andy Brown pulled back a consolation goal for Telford following a well-worked move. However, the day undoubtedly belonged to the Minstermen who will walk out in front of their fans at Wembley on May 9.GoalsYork CityBrodie 20, McBreen 66AFC Telford Brown 86
