Guernsey hit Gwent for three in Regions Cup.
The Guernsey Senior County League have set up a thrilling finale to their UEFA Regions Cup Preliminary Round mini tournament after a resounding 3-0 victory over the Welsh Amateur Champions, Gwent County.
Knowing that nothing less than a victory would suffice, Coach Tony Vance made seven changes to the side that drew their opening game 1-1 with Croatia. The Islanders went about their task in a workman-like manner in the Iza Grada Stadum in Klis and took the lead on 15 minutes when Ross Allen was first to react to a rebound off the post and slotted the ball home.
This settled the England side and they increased their lead on 24 minutes when Glyn Dyer burst through the Welsh defence rounded keeper Davies and slid the ball home.
The second half was only nine minutes old when Allen put the Islander’s further ahead finding the net from a tight angle. This was Allen’s third goal in the two games played and he was clearly relishing the opportunity to play on a European stage.
With the game safe, Vance made two further substitutions maybe with one eye on the final group games on Tuesday.
With news coming through that the game involving the Turkish and Croatian sides ended 0-0, Guernsey now know exactly what they need to do to secure Group A and progress to the Intermediary Round.
A win against the Turks will mean they top the Group however, anything less will throw qualification to Turkey and the expected win by Croatia over Wales may even put qualification as one of the best two runners-up in jeopardy. The last games are on Tuesday 28 September.
