Arsenal and Manchester United have clearly been the country's dominant clubs in recent years, winning 11 of the 13 Premiership titles between them.
When the giants clashed in last season's FA Cup Final in Cardiff, many people were surprised that (a) they had not met in the Final since 1979, when Arsenal won a thriller 3-2 at Wembley and (b) it was only their second Final meeting in the 124-year history of the competition.
The most common Cup Final pairing has been Arsenal v Liverpool, Arsenal v Newcastle United and Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion but in each case that has only involved three Finals.
Perennial Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool have played each other 20 times in The Cup. Those include two finals (in 1986 and 1989), five semi-final matches and five replays. Liverpool have nine victories, Everton six, with five draws.
But no one can quite match this:
In the 1955-56 season Leeds United were drawn at home to Cardiff City in the Third Round and lost 2-1.
In the following season Leeds United were drawn at home to Cardiff City in the Third Round and lost 2-1.
Incredibly, in the season after that Leeds United were drawn at home to Cardiff City in the Third Round and lost 2-1.
Then, in the 1958-59 season, Leeds were handed an away Third Round tie at Luton Town. By that time Leeds and Cardiff were probably sick of the sight of each other.
