Mark Sampson said his team are relishing playing in front of a home crowd for the first time since their World Cup heroics.

The England Women’s boss will take his side to Bristol City’s Ashton Gate on Sunday for a Euro 2017 qualifier against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

The Lionesses won bronze at Canada 2015.

Sampson said: “We are excited by the Bosnia game.

“We’re looking forward to Sunday and getting out there in front of our own supporters.

“It feels like we haven’t played in front of our own fans for ages.

“It’s our first time on home soil since the World Cup and the players will be determined to win first and foremost but also to put on a good show.”

The match is England’s second Euro qualifier following their comprehensive 8-0 dismissal of Estonia in September.

It comes just three days after they earned a 0-0 draw with eight-time European champions Germany in Duisburg.

That was just the fourth time in 22 matches that England had avoided defeat against Silvia Neid’s powerhouses.

And Sampson, former manager of Bristol Academy, believes the two matches this week provide the ideal chance for his players to demonstrate how strong the pool of Lionesses is right now.

He added: “We want to build on what was a good performance against Germany.

“The great thing right now is that we’ve got such strong competition for places.

“We’ve got players who came off the bench to make an impact against Germany, other subs who could have done the same, and players who aren’t even with us who could step into the team – let alone the squad – and produce good performances.”

Sampson continued: “Though the World Cup is over, our journey continues, and this game is an important step on the road to Euro 2017.

“Bosnia will prove a challenging opponent and our focus must, as always, be to uphold the values of the Lionesses with a performance full of character, hard work and togetherness.”

Ranked 72nd in the world, Bosnia are second in qualifying Group 7, albeit having played three more matches than England.

They defeated Serbia and Estonia and have lost home and away to Belgium.
