England Under-21s will be without Tom Carroll and Matty Targett when they face Germany in Middlesbrough on Monday.

Swansea City midfielder Carroll, who captained the side and scored the winner against Czech Republic on Friday and Southampton defender Targett, who made his debut in the same game, have both returned to their clubs through injury.

And head coach Gareth Southgate has revealed he won’t be bringing in any replacements at such short notice ahead of the game at the Riverside Stadium.

"We won’t have Tom Carroll and Matt Targett, which is a shame because we had a small squad for this one anyway," said Southgate, from the team’s Teesside base.

"We have the option of calling some others up, but with our U20s playing today [Sunday], I’d rather they had the chance to start the match they’re playing in.

Matt Targett passes the ball on his England Under-21s debut in Prague.

"And because we’re so close to the summer now, I don’t really want to bring players in that are unlikely to be with us in the summer.

"It’s not perfect, because we have to balance how many minutes some players play, but that’s part of development football really."

Over 28,000 tickets have been sold for the game with Germany, who will be one of England’s rivals at this summer’s Euro Finals in Czech Republic.
